Hypochlorous acid (HOCL) is the most effective sanitiser in the chlorine family available in dilute solution. It is suggested that HOCL is 80 to 120 times more efficacious than sodium hypochlorite. Because HOCL has no charge and has a relatively low molecular weight it is better able than the other chlorine based disinfectants to penetrate the cell walls. It also reacts more rapidly than other chlorine-based disinfectants to oxidation reactions with organic matter, i.e. the critical components of microbial cells.

 Based on scientific investigations the Hypochlorous acid is one of the most effective known biocides. The chemical structure is HOCl.It is produced by the human immune system to kill invasive organisms and fight infection. White blood cells in the human immune system produce hypochlorous acid through the myeloperoxidase-mediated peroxidation of chloride ions. White blood cells release this natural oxidant to fight invading pathogens.

When a wound breaks human skin, it creates a gateway for harmful pathogens to invade human cells. Neutrophils, which are a type of white blood cell, travel in the blood to the site of the wound where the pathogens are invading.When an invading pathogen or infection threatens a human cell, the body’s immune system responds by destroying the pathogen before it can harm the cell.The invading pathogens are engulfed by white blood cells through a process called phagocytosis. Once engulfed, the white blood cell produces an oxidant, hypochlorous acid. Hypochlorous Acid is a biocide and kills the microbial pathogen within milliseconds of contact. This antimicrobial process is called the Oxidative Burst Pathway.

Observational studies

Hypochlorite is very unstable, but hypochlorous acid is stable and is highly microbicidal, active against bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

It has been used in 30 patients to treat venous leg ulcers that had not healed with conventional treatment; 10 achieved a 44% ulcer reduction after 3 weeks [64c]. The other 20 patients were then treated for 12 weeks; in nine cases there was full healing and in five the ulcers were reduced in size by over 60%. All the patients became free of pain. Adverse effects were not reported.

Ultraviolet light, high-energy electron beamshypochlorous acidhydrogen peroxide, and steam cleaning are other techniques that are either used commercially as general sterilizing agents or have been shown to be effective to a degree against mold conidia and or mycotoxins. Electrolyzed strong and weak acid waters have been widely used for sterilization in clinical dentistry because of their excellent bactericidal activities. Electrolyzed neutral water was recently developed with a new concept of long-term good durability in addition to the excellent bactericidal activity similar to acid waters. 

This study investigated the antibacterial effect of electrolyzed water on oral bacteria both in vitro and in vivo. Tap water was electrolyzed in a water vessel using platinum cell technology. The electrolyzed tap water (called Puri-water) was put in contact with five major periodontopathogens or toothbrushes contaminated with these bacteria for 30 sec.
